You have to give up your favorite foods to lose weight

Weight Loss Truth: What would a world without chocolate and without pepperoni pizza be like??? I think it would be a torturous world to live in!! lol, now on a real note I completely disagree with this myth. You are definitely able to eat your favorite foods. Depriving yourself of this kind of pleasure is not fun, and quite frankly you probably WILL eat it anyways. As has been mentioned before, the real key is moderation. If you are a steak lover, then perhaps it might not be the best things to eat it every single day, but perhaps once or twice a week. Those who know me personally know that I LOOOOOOOOVE chicken wings with pizza. In a perfect world where I wouldn’t gain any weight and my arteries were clog-less, I would love to eat it several times per week, well more like every day. However, I know that those aren’t the healthiest of food choices so I have it about 2-3 times per month. I am not giving up my favorite foods, I am just eating it in moderation so that it doesn’t catch up to me in the form of excess weight.

Fat Loss Myth # 12
Overeating is caused by hunger

Weight Loss Fact: Nice try there. If only we could blame “hunger” for it. In fact, this person we call hunger has nothing to do with you OVEREATING. It might have something to do your body telling you that it is time to “fuel up” and that it needs food, but that is not an indication that one should overeat. What causes many people to overeat are different reasons. One of the main ones is feeling of stress, depression, loneliness, anxiety, fear, and other down grading emotions of that nature. Many times food can be a means of satisfying your needs. You might be actually getting your needs met through your foods. For example, if you live a lonely life, and aren’t very happy, then food could perhaps be a means of you feeling happy and comforted. There are other articles that I have written on this subject but suffice it to say that overeating is NOT cause by being hungry.

Only drastic diets work

Weight Loss Truth: There goes that word again…DIEt….those “drastic diets” are only good for quick weight loss and rapid weight gain once you get of it. These drastic diets range from the “cookie diet”, lol…. All that way to “the water only diet”….. I am sure you can lose weight while on these DIEts, however the weight will be gained right back and usually with some added weight as a bonus

Weight Loss Truth: The great Henry Ford once said “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t- you’re right.'”……It is 90% mindset, and 10% actually getting off your butt and doing something about it. You fall down, you get back up…. you fall down again, you get back up again. If you have tried to lose weight in the past then it is time to keep trying. Discouragment is to losing weight as is a piece of fried chicken to a vegetarian……they DO NOT go hand in hand.

Mold Testing and Why It May Not Give You the Correct Answers

So, you suspect that you may have mold, but you are not certain. You have a musty odor and/or you see an area that looks like mold on your walls or ceilings. While beginning to panic, you look online and see that there are Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Mold Test Kits. Since this seems much more cost-effective than hiring a professional (which can cost around $350.00 for mold testing), you head to the nearest store to pick one up!

At the store, you see various brands and the costs are even more reasonable than you initially thought – generally between $10 and $30. Once you get the kit home, you open it to find a petri dish and sticky solution which you place in the room that you believe may have mold. You carefully follow the instructions and after the allotted 24-48 hours, determine that you indeed have some type of mold growth. To find out exactly what type of mold you have, you now send your sample off to the company for “lab testing” (there are over 1,000 kinds of mold typically found indoors). Approximately a week later, the results come back and they tell you indeed have mold and the exact type of mold you have.

However, there are a few issues with your results. First, most of the mold test companies tell you to send in 2 samples. One from the room you believe is infected and the other from outside. This is because there are mold spores everywhere and they need to compare the difference between inside and outside to determine if there is a problem. Unfortunately, the test sample from outside is difficult to get accurate results for due to weather conditions, placement, sun exposure, etc. Since they want 2 samples to compare, you have now doubled your initial expense for the kits.

The next concern about DIY test kits is the petri dish sampling. While this can be an effective method, it is important to remember that mold will grow on almost any surface if the conditions are right. If a mold spore hits the surface in the petri dish (which can easily have come in on your clothes or through an open window), it will grow, but may not be because of mold growth in that particular room.

As well, molds grow at different rates. So, your “lab results” that tell you the types of mold present in your home can be inaccurate. A particular mold may be more prominent in your results simply because it grows faster than the other molds and choked them out in the petri dish during incubation. Furthermore, these tests always come with the disclaimer that False Negatives and False Positives are a possibility due to the fact that the purchaser/user are not mold professionals and could have made errors during the testing.

However, the most frustrating issue with the DIY testing kits is the money. While it seemed like such a good price, the lab fees are extra. And since they recommend 2 kits, that is double that amount to get results that may or may not be very accurate! In addition, many of the “lab results” come back with a recommendation of hiring a mold testing company to confirm their findings. That means that you spent between $100 and $150 for the DIY testing and now they want you to hire the professionals for the additional cost! When all is said and done, this process really only cost you more money than you would have spent hiring the professional in the first place!

Subterranean Termite Control

Termite control methods vary depending on the type of termite involved. Drywood termites have the ability to nest in dry wood without any contact with moist soil. Subterranean termites must nest in the ground as they require the moisture soil provides. Drywood termites may be controlled with fumigation, also known as “tenting.” Subterranean termites however, cannot be controlled by fumigation. They require either soil treatments or baiting methods for control.

Subterranean termites are widespread across the U.S., mostly in the southern states. Because of their wide distribution, experts say subterranean termites cause most of the termite damage to homes and other structures every year. Around $4.5 billion is spent annually for termite control and to repair the damage caused.

To gain entrance to a home, subterranean termites prefer wood that is in contact with the soil. If they cannot find such a situation they can build “mud tubes” from the soil to the wood. Mud tubes are essentially “termite highways” that allow termites access to the wood without being exposed to either weather or predators.

The nature of termites is to remain hidden. They avoid exposure to the outside environment. In addition to the use of mud tubes, they also prefer to remain hidden on the inside of wood. This makes termite control all the more difficult. Infested wood may appear perfectly normal on the outside while the inside is largely eaten away.

Due to the elusive nature of subterranean termites, signs of their activity are minimal. First, look for mud tubes as these are a warning sign. Fresh accumulations of wings are another warning sign. If suspicious areas of wood are located, tap the areas lightly with the handle of a screwdriver. Hollow sounds are another warning sign. Call a termite control professional to confirm your suspicions.

Soil treatments and termite bait are the 2 effective termite control methods. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Soil treatments tend to be disruptive for the homeowner. In addition, large amounts of chemicals are used. On the plus side, infestations can be eliminated fairly quickly and protection continues for several years.

Baiting systems work by offering termites small amounts of wood as bait. When termites locate the bait, the wood is replaced by bait that contains a slow-acting poison. When it is taken back to the colony and shared, the colony dies. The advantages of this termite control system are that it is not disruptive, and that it uses very small amounts of poison. The disadvantages are that it may take several months to eliminate the colony, and that the cost of monitoring make it a bit more expensive than the soil treatment.

Understanding subterranean termites, as well as their behaviors and preferences, is the first step in termite prevention. The next step is identifying potential trouble spots and making the changes necessary to reduce the risk of infestation. Professional termite inspections are a key to damage prevention. If an infestation is spotted, proper termite control methods by a professional is required.
