Choosing the Best Moving Company

Moving can be very tedious, especially if you own a lot of stuff. Packing up all of your things, renting a truck, loading the truck, driving to the new place, and unloading everything… This is all very time-consuming. As a result, many people choose to hire a moving company to do all or part of it.

Unfortunately, although hiring a moving company can save you a lot of time and stress, hiring the wrong moving company can add to it. To protect yourself and your belongings, you will need to know how to choose a moving company.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for a good moving company.

1) How much of the move do you want the moving company to handle?

The saying is that you can hire someone to do almost anything for you – for a price. This is certainly true in this case. Many people choose to box up all their belongings themselves, and hire movers to load/unload the truck and transport everything. Some people, particularly if they are moving cross-country, might rent a truck and hire movers to box everything up and pack the truck, then do the driving themselves. Others hire movers to do absolutely everything, from packing the boxes to unloading it all into the proper rooms in the new house.

2) How much are you budgeting for the move?

Of course, everything that you have the moving company do will add to your bill. If you are on a tight budget, you may need to balance quality and convenience against cost. This means that you might have to do some of the work yourself, and hire movers who will just do the most difficult parts – usually loading and driving the truck. Compare prices between moving companies, and decide which will best suit your needs.

3) How far away are you moving?

Long-distance moves affect two things when choosing a moving company: the cost of the move, and the moving companies you have to choose from. Some local companies may not be able to move you across state lines. Also, for long-distance moves you will want to hire a moving company enough in advance to ensure that they have availability.

4) Does the moving company insure your belongings against damage or loss?

You have a lot of capital invested in your belongings. Think how much money it would take to replace some or all of it if something were to happen during the move. Would you even be able to?

Many moving companies will only reimburse a fraction of the value of your belongings if something happens to them. Ask a moving company how much they pay for lost or damaged belongings, and be sure to get a copy of this policy in writing. If the moving company’s policy doesn’t provide enough coverage, you may want to look into additional insurance.

5) What kind of reputation does the moving company have?

We’ve all heard the horror stories of things turning up missing or broken after the movers have unpacked the truck and left. Just as you want your belongings protected from damage or loss, you also need to know whether a moving company has a reputation for breaking or stealing things.

One way to research a moving company’s reputation is to search for their name online. Look for both complaints and follow-ups, since how the company handled the complaint is at least as important as the complaint itself. You should also check to see if the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau. Although the BBB will attempt to mediate a conflict even if the moving company is not a member, there is less incentive for a non-member to work toward a resolution.

The length of time the company has been in business is also a good indicator of reputation. Companies with bad reputations generally don’t stay in business for very long, so a company that has been around for a long time would probably be a better choice than one that only started up recently.

6) Can the moving company give you references?

A good moving company should be able to provide you with references upon request. Do check these references, but also keep in mind that just like individual, the moving company is likely to offer references that they know will be positive.

Of course, by far the best reference you can get is a referral from a friend or acquaintance. You are probably better off using a moving company recommended by someone you know, rather than one you have never heard of before.

Final Tips for Choosing a Moving Company

When you hire movers, you are putting a large part of your life in someone else’s hands. Things like furniture, clothing, and kitchenware are expensive, but since we usually accumulate them over time, most people don’t realize how much money they have tied up in their household items until they have to replace them all at once.

Since there is so much depending on having good movers, knowing how to choose a moving company is important. Before you begin contact moving companies for quotes, be sure to make a list of the questions you need to ask. This will help you stay focused during the conversation.

Remember, your possessions are valuable, so be sure you find a moving company you can trust!

Mold Testing and Why It May Not Give You the Correct Answers

So, you suspect that you may have mold, but you are not certain. You have a musty odor and/or you see an area that looks like mold on your walls or ceilings. While beginning to panic, you look online and see that there are Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Mold Test Kits. Since this seems much more cost-effective than hiring a professional (which can cost around $350.00 for mold testing), you head to the nearest store to pick one up!

At the store, you see various brands and the costs are even more reasonable than you initially thought – generally between $10 and $30. Once you get the kit home, you open it to find a petri dish and sticky solution which you place in the room that you believe may have mold. You carefully follow the instructions and after the allotted 24-48 hours, determine that you indeed have some type of mold growth. To find out exactly what type of mold you have, you now send your sample off to the company for “lab testing” (there are over 1,000 kinds of mold typically found indoors). Approximately a week later, the results come back and they tell you indeed have mold and the exact type of mold you have.

However, there are a few issues with your results. First, most of the mold test companies tell you to send in 2 samples. One from the room you believe is infected and the other from outside. This is because there are mold spores everywhere and they need to compare the difference between inside and outside to determine if there is a problem. Unfortunately, the test sample from outside is difficult to get accurate results for due to weather conditions, placement, sun exposure, etc. Since they want 2 samples to compare, you have now doubled your initial expense for the kits.

The next concern about DIY test kits is the petri dish sampling. While this can be an effective method, it is important to remember that mold will grow on almost any surface if the conditions are right. If a mold spore hits the surface in the petri dish (which can easily have come in on your clothes or through an open window), it will grow, but may not be because of mold growth in that particular room.

As well, molds grow at different rates. So, your “lab results” that tell you the types of mold present in your home can be inaccurate. A particular mold may be more prominent in your results simply because it grows faster than the other molds and choked them out in the petri dish during incubation. Furthermore, these tests always come with the disclaimer that False Negatives and False Positives are a possibility due to the fact that the purchaser/user are not mold professionals and could have made errors during the testing.

However, the most frustrating issue with the DIY testing kits is the money. While it seemed like such a good price, the lab fees are extra. And since they recommend 2 kits, that is double that amount to get results that may or may not be very accurate! In addition, many of the “lab results” come back with a recommendation of hiring a mold testing company to confirm their findings. That means that you spent between $100 and $150 for the DIY testing and now they want you to hire the professionals for the additional cost! When all is said and done, this process really only cost you more money than you would have spent hiring the professional in the first place!

Subterranean Termite Control

Termite control methods vary depending on the type of termite involved. Drywood termites have the ability to nest in dry wood without any contact with moist soil. Subterranean termites must nest in the ground as they require the moisture soil provides. Drywood termites may be controlled with fumigation, also known as “tenting.” Subterranean termites however, cannot be controlled by fumigation. They require either soil treatments or baiting methods for control.

Subterranean termites are widespread across the U.S., mostly in the southern states. Because of their wide distribution, experts say subterranean termites cause most of the termite damage to homes and other structures every year. Around $4.5 billion is spent annually for termite control and to repair the damage caused.

To gain entrance to a home, subterranean termites prefer wood that is in contact with the soil. If they cannot find such a situation they can build “mud tubes” from the soil to the wood. Mud tubes are essentially “termite highways” that allow termites access to the wood without being exposed to either weather or predators.

The nature of termites is to remain hidden. They avoid exposure to the outside environment. In addition to the use of mud tubes, they also prefer to remain hidden on the inside of wood. This makes termite control all the more difficult. Infested wood may appear perfectly normal on the outside while the inside is largely eaten away.

Due to the elusive nature of subterranean termites, signs of their activity are minimal. First, look for mud tubes as these are a warning sign. Fresh accumulations of wings are another warning sign. If suspicious areas of wood are located, tap the areas lightly with the handle of a screwdriver. Hollow sounds are another warning sign. Call a termite control professional to confirm your suspicions.

Soil treatments and termite bait are the 2 effective termite control methods. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Soil treatments tend to be disruptive for the homeowner. In addition, large amounts of chemicals are used. On the plus side, infestations can be eliminated fairly quickly and protection continues for several years.

Baiting systems work by offering termites small amounts of wood as bait. When termites locate the bait, the wood is replaced by bait that contains a slow-acting poison. When it is taken back to the colony and shared, the colony dies. The advantages of this termite control system are that it is not disruptive, and that it uses very small amounts of poison. The disadvantages are that it may take several months to eliminate the colony, and that the cost of monitoring make it a bit more expensive than the soil treatment.

Understanding subterranean termites, as well as their behaviors and preferences, is the first step in termite prevention. The next step is identifying potential trouble spots and making the changes necessary to reduce the risk of infestation. Professional termite inspections are a key to damage prevention. If an infestation is spotted, proper termite control methods by a professional is required.

Home Lawn Care – How to Hire a Home Lawn Care Service

For many  people, the price of home lawn care service is almost as important as the care their lawn receives. When you start evaluating lawn care companies, remember the old saying, “you get what you pay for.” Remember, a perfect lawn is not necessarily a cheap lawn.

There are big name companies out there like Scotts Lawn Care and Chem Lawn and several others, that can be very expensive, but they do wonderful work. They have all the top lawn care tools and lawn supplies at their disposal. They use the best fertilizer on your lawn, and they will make sure that you have a true green lawn. However there are people who don’t really care, lawn services like these are simply overkill.

There are lots and lots of smaller lawn companies out there that will provide an equivalent level of home lawn care as the big guys, but may give you a lower rate without scrimping on materials or using low quality lawn products. A great way to locate some of these smaller home lawn care services is to ask your neighbors and friends, who they use for their lawn care. A company that provides great lawn care services, with a good reputation in the neighborhood, will be promoted widely by word of mouth.

Check out your friends and neighbors grass. Ask them if they are happy with lawn care business they are dealing with. Are they satisfied with the service? Are they well treated? Do they have that perfect lawn that you wish you had on your property?

With a bit of care, landscaper services shouldn’t be that hard to find. Be careful though because sometimes, lower price can mean lower quality. Get a price quote for basic lawn care service, then get a separate quote for anything extra that you may want done. Do you want some landscaping? Is it extra for lawn fertilizing? Do they user top name products like Scotts fertilizer or do they use some generic turf builder?

What about grass seed?  Do they use the best grass seeds available?  A reputable lawn company will be able to give you the names and product labels of all their grass seed blends, fertilizers and pest control products.

What techniques do they use to improve the health of your soil and grass. This is an important part of any home lawn care program and not all companies provide these services. Some services you would want them to include are lawn seeding, overseeding, topdressing, lawn aeration, and hand weeding. Yes, believe it or not, some of this work still needs to be done by hand!

If they don’t provide these services, perhaps they can show you how to do them on your own. Believe it or not, you need to learn how to seed grass so that you end up with a beautiful green lawn. You don’t want to kill your grass after all.

I hope that you find these questions useful when you are choosing a home lawn care company. You know you can’t afford those top of the line lawn care tools, but they will have them for you. They will have the best lawn seeds, they will have the best fertilizers and they will help you grow beautiful, perfect grass and a beautiful, perfect lawn.

Imagine you build a list of 500 subscribers, offer them a product via a link in their email, and every person you refer that buys the product earns you £20 and only half your list (250) click through and buy the product you just made £5000 sending an email, and you can do this 1-2 a week! hell you could do this everyday but I advise against it remember nobody likes spam! I suggest 1-2 regular emails per week with occasional time based offers in between.

Numerous people have verified that is a wonderful platform to promote goods on the web. Open up a digital shop and promote it. People buy your products. The product or service is sent to them, while you kick back and think about how to spend your new found online income as it rolls in.

In the event Shopify is just not your current cup of tea, then you can try out eBay. As the saying goes, “One man’s trash is usually an another man’s treasure”, and so have a look through your current cabinets as well as outdoor storage sheds don’t forget the attic! and market off some of your current unwanted excess gifts.

Some people love to travel and find bargains and if your one of those people you can make a lot of money on eBay by finding and visiting garage sales, car boots even charity shops for well under priced products you can instantly turnaround and sell for a profit on eBay, I know several people who do this that come to mind, going out buying stuff, tidying it up and selling it online from home. Another is my auntie who I love dearly but she is a real horder, who sells occasionally just to fund her holidays.

4 — Sell your own individual info product

Earn Online Income from home by selling your own product. Passionate about a specific subject or topic? Write an e-book, publish it and sell it online. Your information product may also come in the form of a DVD, software package, audio guide or maybe online video.

If promoted and produced successfully this can easily become #1 when it comes to online incomes from home, especially when you merge this with #2 and use your product to build and promote your list.

That Concludes my top four online income methods from home, I started with #1 I chose to promote a company called SFI as it was free and offered a multitude of different training marketing methods and support, but it wasn’t until I branched out into methods #2 #3 and #4, that I really had the online income from home I wanted, these days I rarely work from home. With my new found income I suddenly found my friends an family pool increased accordingly too. So I maintain my online income from anywhere I can jump on Wi-Fi connection with my laptop or smartphone.

We all learn things at our own pace and style usually, inside the very first couple of months you will be generating around £10 – £20 daily (That a tank of gas, internet or phone bill covered at least), If you continue to duplicate these business models as well as create completely new content material for each of your niche’s, your currently targeted traffic can only grow and grow therefore so will your online income from home, there is no reason at all why you couldn’t be earning £100 a day online, that’s the latest pair of shoes, clothes, gadgets on a daily basis or perhaps a weekend away with your partner, family and friends.

Whichever methods you choose, remember the only way you can fail is to give up! If you don’t give up it surely only a matter of time before you reach your goals.

8 Ways a Small Business Can Use Print Shops

Managing a small business can be tough. Thousands of things must be done, and they must be done in a way that looks professional to potential customers or clients. One way to make certain tasks easier is by using the services of print shops. Below is a list of a eight different things a small business can use print shops for.

1. Business Card Printing

Some people may think business cards are obsolete in today’s digital world. This is simply not the case. A business card can create that personal, tangible connection that can be quite beneficial to starting up a new business relationship. It can also include any URLs, social media accounts and e-mails that relate to that business as well.

2. Brochure Printing

Another great way to advertise a business is with professional looking brochures. Such brochures can usually be placed inside the local tourist information center, local restaurants or other businesses free of charge. It’s one easy way to get the word out about your business.

3. Menu Printing

Menus are vitally important to any successful restaurant. While some restaurateurs may be tempted to print their own menus, the results are usually cheap and ugly looking. Instead, using print shops to produce professional menus can leave a stronger impression with customers and critics.

4. Postcard Printing

Certain businesses may want to sell merchandise. One very cheap and fun form of merchandise is a post card. If a customer buys a post card, it also means advertising for your business. The people that receive such postcards in the mail may be enticed to some day visit on their own.

5. Gift Certificate Printing

Another thing many businesses should consider purchasing from print shops is gift certificates. Gift certificates are always big money makers. This is because they are rarely all redeemed at a later point in time. This means quick profit with possibly no overhead.

6. Wall Graphic Printing

Sometimes, the walls of a business or restaurant may appear a little boring. One way to really spruce them up is with wall graphics. Wall graphics can be both colorful and attention grabbing. They can also be much more detailed than other options such as painted murals.

7. Letterhead Printing

Another way to make a small business seem much more professional is by ordering letterhead printing from a printing company. This can impress business partners and clients that receive mail from you. It can also help build the confidence of employees that work in the office.

8. Poster Printing

Lastly, another great option for using print shops is poster printing. Such posters can be placed where customers frequent. With some additional information such as an address, website URL and phone number, a single poster can produce many sales.

What You Need to Quickly and Easily Outsource SEO Content Writing

Chief among the specialized skills that your business should outsource, you should outsource SEO content writing.

Writing SEO content is a specialization that marries insight from two important areas: how the human psyche works, and how search engines crawl. In other words, the science of keyword analysis applied to the art of human communication.

SEO content development is more important than ever

It’s been maligned and misunderstood as trying to “game” search engines, but is it really an evil word, “SEO”? No.

According to the Wikipedia SEO content definition:

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users.

As long as there are search engines, the content will have to be optimized for search engines. As search engines become more “human”, backdoor tactics and deceptive methods will more and more become obsolete. And that’s a good thing for us all.

Now – more than before Google’s revolutionary algorithm changes of recent months – our chances of ranking high are better than ever. The scammers and spammers who used awkward tactics to block up our search engine results pages have been flushed away. But you still do need to understand how search engines “think”, if you want to score well with them and attract more traffic to your websites.

Is “outsource” an evil word, then?

Since SEO content writing is such an important and specialized skill, is it a mistake to outsource it?

Yes – if you outsource such crucial work to a part-timer working out of his parents’ bedroom halfway around the world. But if you hire a professional to provide a well-defined product into a well-honed workflow: No, it’s definitely no mistake.

Outsourcing can open up a whole world of talent at your disposal, for a fraction of the cost of traditional employment. And thanks to the internet, you can quickly and easily take advantage of the global outsourcing company boom.

It used to be that you could just write keyword-rich content and rank well

You know what those look like:

“Dog training trainers are always looking for the best dog training resources they can find. Unfortunately, dog training resources are not always available at dog training pet stores. However, at, you can find all your dog training needs at our dog training website.”

Not only is copy like that annoying as heck to read, but it now gets penalized by Google’s algorithms.

Google is always trying to get its search engine to think more like a human – maybe one day it will, and “SEO content” will simply be called “content”. But until that day comes, if ever, SEO will always be an essential need for all businesses online.

  • Keyword stuffing is dead.
  • Indiscriminate backlinking is dead.
  • Deceptive methods are dead.
  • But SEO is alive and kicking harder than ever, especially with LSI.

LSI isn’t a drug, but it’s a cure.

Today, search engines use a methodology called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), which uses mathematical models to figure out the overall theme of a body of copy, the way people normally talk.

So, instead of ranking an article based on keywords, Google now ranks an article for using the key phrases that real people use when they talk about a given subject.

This means that today’s solid SEO content is creative SEO content. Unlike the bad old days of keyword stuffing, LSI themed keyword content reads and sounds the way a human speaks – because it uses the actual phrases that a real person would use.

3 reasons why you need outsourced content:

1. It keeps your content writing fresh

Writing new SEO content on a regular basis is not an easy task, but a dedicated SEO Content Writer can provide you with fresh SEO copy regularly, no problem.

2. Content writing for social media has gone SEO as well

Social media marketing begins with solid SEO content. How so? You want people to tweet, like, share and otherwise upvote your content. Which they can only do if:

  1. Your content is great and
  2. They can find your great content

A good SEO Content Writer hits both targets.

This goes for content writing for Facebook, Google+, blogs – everything.

3. Premium content is even central to video – which is skyrocketing in importance

Videos are based on scripts and introduced by copy on web pages, whether your own or on YouTube. This copy must be SEO copy.

What do you need to successfully outsource?

1. A well-defined workflow, eg, a website into which you simply plug and play solid content

2. A willingness to benefit from a world of top talent – not just what can be found in your particular geographical location

3. Expert SEO Content Writers who are well versed with what works in SEO today

There’s a difference between SEO Content Writers and conventional writers: professional SEO writing is qualified and optimized to be ranked highly by today’s search engine algorithms, whereas general writing is not.

Great Reception Idea – Vintage Photo Booth

If you are looking for a really unique wedding favor idea, as well as a way to wow your guests, a vintage photo booth is a fantastic idea. It is something that will add a memorable touch to your reception, and your guests are sure to flip over it. Here are some ideas on how to include a vintage photo booth at your wedding reception.

Everyone has been to a million weddings where the favor is a tiny box of chocolates. Edible favors are great, to be sure, but they are also very typical and completely unoriginal. If you really want to make a splash, you need to come up with a different idea that your guests will truly enjoy. One of the most fun ideas out there is to rent a vintage photo booth for your guests to have fun with.

Photos are always a neat idea for a wedding favor. After all, how often do people get all dressed up in their most spectacular clothing and best jewelry, besides for a wedding? This is why your guests will love the idea of having a few pictures of themselves in their fancy dresses and wedding jewelry that they can take home that very evening. At one wedding that I attended, the couple had a photographer on hand who took pictures of the guests and then printed them out and put them in frames to take home as favors. This was a huge hit with the guests and worked well with their very formal wedding. But for couples who are hoping to add a little more lighthearted fun and whimsy into the guests’ pictures, the photo booth will really hit the right note.

Placement of the photo booth new orleans is one thing to consider. Do you want it in the hallway of your venue? Near the dance floor? Or maybe back in a corner? There is likely to be a lot of traffic flow to the booth, so be sure to situate it in a location where it will not create backups for destinations like the buffet table or restrooms.

For most of your guests, having a photo booth at a wedding will be a novel experience. Let them know what is going on by placing a small placard on each table. You can write up a short note thanking them for coming, and asking that they have fun taking pictures in the photo booth to take home as favors.  The nice thing is that this is something that guests of all generations will enjoy.

When you are renting a photo booth for your wedding, you will have a few options. Some are classic like you used growing up, and some are digital. There can be advantages to either type, depending on your exact preferences. Whichever you choose, ask about having a cd created that captures all of the silly pictures that your guests made. You can even go all out, and rent a plasma tv that will show a streaming slideshow of all of the pictures taken that evening. That is a fantastic way to get your guests really excited about the photo booth.

Finally, when if you do decide to rent a photo booth for your wedding reception, also set up a scrapbooking table next to it. Ask your guests to take a set of photos for themselves, as well as another set to put into a memory book for the bride and groom. Your guests can put their pictures into the album along with their signatures and a note to the bride and groom. The guests will have a great time, and the newlyweds will end up with a very special type of guest book that will be treasured for many years.

Designing a Stone Retaining Wall for Your Landscape

Installing a stone retaining walls Canberra on your property can improve the functionality of your yard, enhance your property’s value and curb appeal, and distinguish your landscape from the others in your neighborhood. There is a wide range of stone materials and construction techniques to choose from when designing one for your property, so be sure to consider the location, purpose, and style that best fits your landscape’s needs. Each retaining wall is unique, but here are the two basic methods that are used:

Dry-laid walls use either natural stone or segmented block that is built upon a compacted base. The key here is to make sure that the base is properly compacted and there are several courses of material installed below grade. It is also important to make sure that these retaining walls have a batter, which means that it is stepped back into the slope and will not fail and fall forward from soil and water back-pressure. When constructing a dry-laid wall of a height greater than 4 feet, you may also need to install a geo-grid fabric, which uses the weight of the back-fill material as an anchor to hold the retaining wall in place.

There are many options of natural stone used in dry laid retaining walls such as Bluestone, Pennsylvania Fieldstone and Carney Boulders. For segmented retaining walls there are many brands, colors and textures available and a full range of sizes to choose from. The strength and overall look of your retaining wall will likely vary depending on the wall’s height.

Concrete block or poured concrete retaining walls are a good choice for homeowners with limited space where it would be difficult to install a geo-grid support system or batter. It’s important that these walls are also built on top of a compacted sub grade and that it is below the local frost line. In the northeast of the United States this is usually forty inches or so below grade.

After the concrete wall is installed, a veneer stone is applied to the surface of the wall that complements the style or your home and property. With so many veneer stone choices in the market today, this type of wall is often selected when incorporating the wall into other structures like outdoor fireplaces, garden architecture, water features, and outdoor kitchens.

Be sure to consult an experienced landscape designer when navigating the many choices of material and techniques for installing landscape stone walls. Whether you live in the United States, it is important to first know the needs of your landscape site and the materials that will best match those needs.

What are the common problems – An old stone retaining wall that was well constructed can last hundreds of years… no kidding. Even the best built walls though will eventually succumb to the powers of Mother Nature and will at some point need some type of repair. Generally that repair is the re-setting of a few loose stones and the replacement of missing or deteriorated mortar joints.

Pressure wash to remove dirt and loose material – The first step in the tuckpointing process is to thoroughly pressure wash the wall. This not only removes dirt, mold and soot but the pressurized water will etch the surface of the joints which will aid in the bonding of the replacement pointing mortar.

Care should be taken not to get to close to the wall. It may take a few minutes to figure out the distance needed to get the best cleaning action without destroying the wall itself!

Fill in all mortar joints if you can – Whenever I have a stone tuckpointing job I always try to convince the customer to completely point in all the mortar joints. There are three reasons for this.

The first reason is that most walls have a rake joint so it is easy to point in over the existing mortar.

The second reason is that the color of all the new pointing mortar will be the same since all the joints will be tuckpointed. This prevents problems when the customer is expecting the new joints to match the old joints perfectly; something everyone wants but most are not willing to pay for.

The third reason is that you can use a grout back to fill in the joints which allows for quicker installation time and more value for the dollar spent, so the customer gets more bang for his dollars.

Mixing of the tuckpointing mortars – Since I typically use a grout bag I mix my mortar fairly loose or wet. I also use a bonding agent which will help initially with water dispersion throughout the mix but will become problematic on hot days due to the drying of the mortar in the grout bag.

So good advice is to keep the mortar loose and periodically clean and dampen your grout bag to remove any hardened material. This will allow you to apply even pressure as you grout the joints to a consistent thickness and make the application simpler and easier.

Squeezing the mortar into place – How to place the tuckpointing mortar can be done in numerous ways but the grout bag is the most productive. I start at one end of the wall and begin filling all of the deep holes in the wall with new mortar making sure it is about the same height as the existing mortar joints.

When I have finished with the deep holes I go back to the beginning and start grouting every joint. I let the new mortar stand ‘proud’ and ‘ride high’ above the face of the existing stone. This allows ample material when I push the mortar back into the joint.

Finishing the tuckpointing – After I have grouted a sufficient area I take a fat tuckpointer of ¾” or larger, depending on the joint size and start to push the mortar into the joint between the stones. This tightens the joint and closes off any voids that may have been missed during the grouting process.

Immediately after I take my tooling iron and ‘finish the joint out’ with the desired joint type such as flat, beaded or grapevine finish. Then when a light crust has formed over the new joints I take a soft brush and brush away any loose tags and smooth the joints out.

As with all masonry repairs the process isn’t too difficult however if you want your work to be presentable and to look nice, you must pay attention to the details!
